AFA Urges Ferret Owners to Get Involved in Efforts
to Regulate Kit Sales
Posted: October 7, 2002

As previously announced by the American Ferret Association, efforts are underway to urge the USDA to regulate the age at which baby ferrets may be shipped by commercial breeders to distributors and pet stores for the purpose of being sold as pets. The concern is that kits are being shipped at too young of an age; before they are old enough to survive on their own. To read the initial story on this effort, click here.

The USDA has informed the AFA that it could take up to a year before a ruling is made on this issue. The following is the contents of a letter being sent out on behalf of the AFA to urge ferret owners to get involved.

USDA INFORMS AFA IT COULD TAKE UP TO ONE YEAR TO COMPLETE RULEMAKING REGARDING TRANSPORTATION OF INFANT FERRETS

The USDA has informed the American Ferret Association that it could take up to one (1) year for the final rulemaking to be completed regarding the shipment of infant ferrets. USDA officials told us that if people wrote to their Congressmen and Senators to REQUEST that the USDA complete this rulemaking more quickly, it could make a difference and be the push they need.

Therefore, the American Ferret Association is making available a form letter which people can fill in to send to their Senators/Congressmen for their district. We hope all of you who have sent in letters to the AFA regarding this issue will now help us again give a push to the USDA for a quicker resolution to this problem. The sooner we can get more reasonable criteria in place, the sooner we can protect baby ferrets from dying in transit and in pet stores due to immaturity and insufficient size and weight.
